Rondina, Pons to lead nat’l beach volleyball team hopefuls
Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons will lead the national beach volleyball team hopefuls once LVPI sets its tryouts.

Have you ever wondered why high-leaping, power-hitters Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons skipped the national women’s indoor volleyball team tryouts last month?

That’s because the two players have already committed themselves to vie for spots for the beach volleyball squad that will see action in the 30th Manila Southeast Asian Games in November.

Larong Volleyball sa Pilinas, Inc. president Peter Cayco confirmed that University of Sto. Tomas standout Rondina and former Far Eastern University star Pons preferred to try their luck in beach volleyball.

“Ayaw lang namin na nakuha ka na sa indoor, tryout ka pa sa beach. We want separate teams talaga. Like si Rondina and si Pons nagsabi na sila talaga bago pa mag-tryouts (sa indoor), ‘Sir sa beach volleyball na kami magta-tryout.’ Mas gusto raw nila yun,” said Cayco.

Rondina and Pons are battle-tested veterans in beach volleyball. The pair won back-to-back titles for Petron in the Philippine Superliga Challenge Cup.

Rondina also has in her credentials four UAAP beach volleyball titles in her five-year collegiate stint, numerous crowns in the Beach Volleyball Republic events and a quarterfinals finish in last year’s FIVB beach volleyball Manila Open.

Pons and Rondina represented the Philippines in the last edition of the SEA Games two years ago, making the tandem possible shoo-ins for the squad.

“Siguro ‘yun ang isang team pero kailangan kasi natin ng matangkad baka i-pair natin or what (sa iba) but let’s see what the coaches do. Pero ‘yung dalawa nagsabi na, ang preference nila ay beach volleyball,” said Cayco.

LVPI’s selection committee chaired by Ginio Panganiban is expected to name the head coach of the men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams within the week.

“After the coaching staff is chosen maybe in two weeks’ time, magsi-set na sila ng tryouts,” according to the LVPI head.

Cayco said that the association plans to field two teams in both divisions in the SEA Games event to be held in Subic.
