The country will once again host the prestigious FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour by staging the Boracay Open 2019 set on May 23 to 26.
National team hopefuls led by Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons get a chance to test their mettle against the best beach volleyball players from around the globe in the FIVB World Tour Boracay Open 2019 set on May 23 to 26.
Heart-stopping action and spectacular plays will be in full display as 48 teams in the men’s and women’s divisions clash for pride and honor at the sand courts of the White House Beach Resort in Boracay.
The double-gender tournament has attracted 28 men’s teams and 20 women’s squads from 17 countries.
Event host Beach Volleyball Republic in cooperation with the Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. see the event as a testing ground for national team hopefuls looking to represent the country in the Manila Southeast Asian Games on November.
“The LVPI is the federation that takes charge of the selection process for the Philippine team and national team pool. We’ve already tapped the coaches for SEA Games through LVPI,” said BVR co-founder and tournament director Charo Soriano on Sunday during the event’s press conference.
Rondina and Pons, who won two titles in the Philippine Superliga beach volleyball tournament together playing for Petron, are considered to be one of the top tandems expected to make the cut in the biennial meet.
The Boracay Open 2019, which is the second straight one-star FIVB beach volleyball event that the country will host after the successful staging of the Manila leg last year, will give the vaunted SiPons tandem a feel of their level of play not only against regional rivals but also against world competitions as well.
“A lot of the teams are representing FIVB as well as teams who will be playing in the SEA Games,” added Soriano. “This is a very good chance for our local players to really develop their level of play through the international arena, because they are not only competing against Southeast Asian teams but they are also gonna be competing against global teams.”
This will be Rondina’s, a four-time UAAP beach volleyball champion and Most Valuable Player, second straight FIVB world tour stint after a quarterfinals finish last year playing alongside Dzi Gervacio. Pons is coming off another title conquest in the PSL.
The SiPons tandem also played in the SEA Games beach volleyball tourney held in Singapore two years ago.
Also representing the country in women’s division are the duo of Bea Tan and Dij Rodriguez, second-time entries Jackielyn Estoquia and DM Demontano, Patty Orendain and Fiola Ceballos and the pair of Babylove Barbon and Gen Eslapor.
Meanwhile, veetrans Ranran Abdilla will team up with Jessie Lopez as one of the three PHI entries in the men’s division. The pair of James Buytrago and Anthony Albastro and the tandem Mike Abria and Jade Becaldo are the other local bets.
