PLDT keeps unbeaten slate, takes solo lead

Philippine national team members John Vic De Guzman and Mark Alfafara teamed up and wreaked havoc on offense as PLDT edged out Sta. Elena, 25-10, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19, on Thursday to remain unscathed in the 2019 Spikers' Turf Reinforced Conference at the Paco Arena in Manila.     

Alfafara and national team captain De Guzman had 19 points each in the Power Hitters’ fourth straight win.

“Siguro lagi lang pinagdidiinan ni coach sa akin na ‘yung pagre-receive is attitude lang, doon ako mahina so dapat ma-change [ko]. ‘Yung attitude ko, kailangan kapag may bolang paparating sa akin, kunin ko lang ng kunin,” said Alfafara, who also had 12 receptions and seven digs.

Angelo Almendras had 14 points for the 2-1 Ball Hammers while James Natividad added 13 markers.

Meanwhile, national team hitter Marck Espejo powered Cignal past Rebisco-Philippines, 25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 25-18, for a 3-0 win-loss slate at solo second spot.

The four-time Spikers' Turf MVP had 18 markers while setter Vince Mangulabnan dished out 29 excellent sets for the HD Spikers. Team captain Ysay Marasigan contributed 10 points for Cignal.

Fauzi Ismail led the way for the Nationals with 15 markers.

In the curtain-raiser, Philippine Army drowned Philippine Coast Guard 25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, for its second win in three games.

Coast Guard absorbed its fourth defeat in as many outings.
