Domingo to skipper Nat'l U-23 women's team in Thai tourney
Si Celine [Domingo] ang magba-banner ngayon ng Under-23 ngayon. Siya na ‘yung pinaka-senior -- national team women's U-23 coach Kungfu Reyes on naming Celine Domingo as team captain

National women’s Under-23 volleyball team head coach Kungfu Reyes will bank on the experience and veteran presence of Celine Domingo come the 2019 Thailand Open Sealect Tuna Championships on July 4 to 10.

Reyes named Domingo of Far Eastern University as team captain of the 14-woman squad that will participate in the prestigious invitational tournament for club and U-23 teams from different Asian countries.

“Si Celine [Domingo] ang magba-banner ngayon ng Under-23 ngayon. Siya na ‘yung pinaka-senior,” said Reyes, who was thankful to Domingo’s club team Creamline for loaning the middle blocker to the Nationals despite the Cool Smashers’ ongoing campaign in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference.

Domingo will take over the position of University of the Philippines’ Isa Molde, who was named skipper during the introduction of the national U-23 pool.

Molde as well as Tots Carlos and Marist Layug are all included in the pool but the trio had to beg off because of their club team Motolite’s push for a semis spot in the PVL.

“‘Yun nga kasi hindi rin mapayagan kasi meron rin silang ipinaglalaban e,” said Reyes. “Kasi nga nagbi-build rin sila ng new team so naintindihan namin yung mga ganoong part. Hindi rin naman kami insisting na kasi meron din silang dapat gawin para sa team nila.”

Reyes said that he submitted the 14-man lineup, a very young team, last Monday.

Included in the roster are University of Sto. Tomas players Mafe Galanza, Kecelyn Galdones, Ysa Jimenez, setter Maji Mangulabnan, Rachelle Roldan, Imee Hernandez, and Janna Torres.

Rossie Rosier and Jewel Encarnacion of University of the Philippines, FEU’s Ivanna Agudo and Lyann De Guzman, Justine Jazareno of De La Salle University and UAAP Season 81 high school Most Valuable Player Angel Canino of De La Salle-Zobel complete the very young lineup.

“So si Celine na ‘yung pinaka-senior na maglalaro doon so that's why she will be our captain ball,” said Reyes.

The U-23 team will fly to Thailand on July 3 together with the national men's team.
