Marck Espejo and Bryan Bagunas will banner the Nationals in the 2019 Thailand Open Sealect Tuna Championships.
Bryan Bagunas and Marck Espejo spearhead the Philippine national men’s volleyball team in the 2019 Thailand Open Sealect Tuna Championships from July 4 to 10.
National team head coach Dante Alinsunurin chose the members of the 14-man lineup from the 20-man national pool based on their skills and familiarity with his system.
“Una, naging basis diyan is ‘yung kakayahan ng mga bata, ‘yung pwedeng mabilisan maka-adapt ng mga gusto naming mangyari,” said Alinsunurin.
“Fifty-percent naman halos nasa teams ko eh, nasa team ng Air Force saka Sta. Elena. So medyo na-adapt talaga ‘yung sistema then the rest is nandyan naman si [Marck] Espejo, madali naman mag adapt ng mga pwede naming gawin,” he added.
The team will be flying to Thailand on July 3.
Also seeing action in the Nationals’ international stint as preparation for the 30th Southeast Asian Games are skipper John Vic De Guzman, Mark Alfafara, Ranran Abdilla, Rex Intal, Peter Torres, Kim Malabunga, Francis Saura, Jack Kalingking, Ricky Marcos, Jessie Lopez, Kim Dayandante, and setter Ish Polvorosa.
Another factor that the decorated mentor put into consideration in selecting the team is the players’ experience in both their professional and international stints.
“Importante kasi sakin ‘yung [experience] eh, medyo short kasi ‘yung preparation natin. Dati kasi parang dapat year talaga ‘yung preparation or dapat tuloy tuloy ‘yung liga,” he said.
“Ngayon sabi ko nga, kailangan talaga ‘yung experience nila is sobrang haba para pagdating ng SEA games, hindi na kami masyadong baguhan sa laro,” Alinsunurin further explained.
