The Philippine men's national team fell short of its Finals bid.
Despite its strong desire to enter the final round, the Philippine national men’s volleyball team fell prey to the Royal Thai Army, 19-25, 21-25, 25-19, 19-25, in the semifinals of the 2019 Thailand Open Sealect Tuna Championships at the Wee Sommay Gymansium in Sisaket, Monday.
The Filipinos, who are coming off a one-day rest following their elimination round victory over Fine Chef Phitsanulok, made a gallant stand, refusing to go down without a fight.
Down two sets, the Filipinos looked sharp in the third set as they took a 16-11 lead and held on to extend the match with Bryan Bagunas and Ranran Abdilla sealing the frame with back-to-back hits.
Adjusting well with the Nationals’ set plays, the Thais fought back in the fourth and built a six-point lead that the Nationals failed to hurdle as they were relegated in the battle for third.
Trailing for almost the whole second set, the Nationals came within striking distance, 19-21, with Marck Espejo capping the run with two consecutive kill blocks.
Bagunas pushed the PHI within, 21-23, before Chakkit Chandahuadong finished the set with two emphatic kills.
The Nationals will face Thai-Denmark Saraburi in the battle for third place on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.
It will be an all-Thailand championship match between Thai Army and Thai Air Force.
