Shaq Delos Santos will remain as head coach of the Philippine women’s volleyball team.
Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. decided to retain Delos Santos’ spot after the local sports’ governing body's technical meeting Friday.
“Ang naging desisyon kanina sa meeting status quo. Lahat retained,” said LVPI national team program head Peter Cayco.
Delos Santos was appointed as head coach in 2018, replacing Ramil De Jesus after just a couple of months heading into the 18th Asian Games. De Jesus stepped down from his spot because of personal reasons.
Delos Santos called the shots in the Nationals’ Asian Games and AVC Asian Cup participation in 2018. The Filipinas finished eight out of 11 nations in the Asiad and second to the last in the 10-team field in the Asian Cup.
He then steered the squad to back-to-back bronze medal finishes in the ASEAN Grand Prix last year.
Expectations were high for the women’s squad in the 30th Southeast Asian Games despite missing the services of some key players but the Filipinas finished with a disappointing winless outing in the four-nation field last month.
The Fillipinas are looking to participate in a couple of international tournaments this year.
Men’s head coach Dante Alinsunurin will also keep his spot after steering the Nationals to a historic SEA Games silver medal finish.
